Across the United States, almost everyone has reason to complain about the growing price of food. Consumers, who must purchase food in order to survive, are faced with costs that are reaching epic proportions. For the buyers of the products the rise in food costs has become almost unbearable. Still, that doesn’t mean there are not people who benefit from the increase in the cost of food. There is some indication that those who sell food commodities are doing just fine.
While there are some indications that sellers are actually benefiting from the rising cost of foodstuffs, the truth is high food costs affect everybody. While it may be true that a commodity broker the specializes in rice may be charging a higher price today than they were last year, they still mist get products from somewhere – their prices have increased as well. In fact, some reliable economic studies seem to prove that the increase in food costs isn’t a function of the recession completely. Other factor, such as the cost of labor and the price of raw materials is also affecting the price of food today.
Whatever the cause of these higher than average food prices, it seems apparent that until the economic crisis is well behind us we have little choice than to accept the higher prices. In the United States, we have not yet seen mass rioting in response to food shortages and high prices. It is scary to think that in a country as developed as ours there may come a time when many of our citizens can literally not afford to eat.
The next few years will tell us how severe are recession is and how high food prices are will become. It’s a scary time to live in our country. Then again, it is a scary time to live anywhere. Until something changes, everyone should sharpen their scissors and keep clipping coupons.
